Week 2, here we go! A few of my favorite shows this week were in Pontiac, Michigan, Chicago, and of course, Halloween in Minneapolis. Unfortunately I’ve been super sick, but I tried to step up my dress game, so I at least felt good when I was onstage! That’s always been a good life trick for me: whenever you are super nervous for something, or under the weather, or tackling something huge for the first time, dress in something that makes you feel confident! When you feel good about how you’re presenting yourself, it carries over to other areas of your life too.
Pontiac, Michigan (just outside Detroit)
I went with one of my simplest but favorite black dresses. Detroit is coooold this time of year so I paired it with black tights instead of thigh highs, and my go-to leather jacket.
Since this show was the day before Halloween, I had to go with another one of my favorite black dresses and bundled up in my witchiest jacket. Chicago is also chilly this time of year, which was the perfect excuse to finally wear my velvet Unif dress! It makes me feel very Wednesday Addams.
Off days are a rarity, so when they come around, it’s important to be comfortable. I have a variety of clothes I mix and match for our long drives, but one of my favorites is wearing a long tank as a dress with leggings (or in this case, boy shorts) underneath, and a flannel tied around my waist (a super handy trick for when days start warm and end cold). My hair is still curled from the previous show– I like to give my hair a break on days off, because I’m constantly applying heat to it for the shows.
Halloween– Minneapolis, Minnesota:
How I love Halloween. It is seriously the best holiday. The boys and I decided to dress up as characters from Peter Pan– I chose Tinkerbell, of course. This costume is probably one of my favorites ever– it was very DIY, which I think always works best. My mama had picked up a children’s “dark fairy” costume on sale in case I ever wanted to be one for Halloween (she is seriously the most intuitive human ever), so I did what I do with a fair amount of dresses: I wore it backwards. I know that sounds super weird, but I find that some dresses have cooler backs than fronts. I have two I wear onstage that are always backwards, and you’d never know! Weirdo Danielle tip #83736282. This costume had a shiny metallic green front, but the back was a black v-neck– much more flattering that way. It came with green wings, and I paired it with my new rhinestone thigh highs (also worn backwards– the rhinestones are supposed to go in the back, but I like them in the front better!) and black booties. I bedazzled my face with some gems (applied with eyelash glue), and my favorite part of my costume was getting to conduct the audience with a magic wand. Pretty sure all of my dreams came true that night.
Sometimes we have to drive all through the night to reach the next city on-time, and we don’t get to a hotel until 5 or 6 AM the next morning. On those nights, I keep makeup remover wipes handy to take the day off so I feel slightly less gross when I go to sleep in the van. My pick: Neutrogena Makeup Remover Cleansing Towelettes. They’re awesome to carry with you whenever you need to freshen up your face in a pinch! I’ve used them on camping trips and vacations too.
